Making traditional Steamed Modaks take some time as you need to prepare the outer covering and the filling both separately. Shape them and steam. These dry fruit modaks are an easy alternate to the traditional modaks especially if you do not have time. During Ganesh Chaturthi we all make many kinds of modaks. These dry fruit modaks can be made the same way as I have shown or can also be made as stuffed modaks. You always have the option to stuff this in the same rice flour dough we make for the traditional Modak. But a mixture made with mawa or Semolina will also be great if you want to try out something different. If you want to make these with a rava covering, check out this Rava Modak. To make these dry fruit modaks, you can use any nuts and dried fruits of choice. I have used the basic stuff like figs, dates, apricots, cashews and almonds. You can also use pistachios, roasted and skinned peanuts, roasted sesame seeds, dried coconut (copra). Feel free to use what you have in hand. How to Make Dry Fruits Modak (Stepwise photos)
- Chop the nuts and dry roast them until they turn lightly golden. You can skip chopping, if you have a powerful blender. I used walnuts, almonds and cashews. You can use what ever you have including peanuts or pistachios.
- Cool them and powder in a blender.
- Fine or coarse powder is your choice.
- Add all the chopped dry fruits. I used raisins, dates, apricots, figs. You can also use only dates.
- Blend until nuts and fruits blend well.
- Grease the mould and take a generous portion of this mixture and stuff inside it. Press from beneath on all the sides to give a good shape. Open the mould and remove the modak gently. To shape them without a mould, divide the dough to 8 to 10 balls and roll them smooth. Shape them gently. Related Recipes
